I think that they are reading the minds of the people in the row below/before them.. ie) learning from history. The columns where they keep reading and learning, the faces stay intact, whereas the columns (generally nearer the centre) where they stop reading, the faces start to distort and break ie) they fail to learn from those who have gone before, and so are harmed themselves.
Well.... that's how I read it! Probably way off what the artist was thinking.....
Rage against the norm, conform not to their insanity....
