can I recommend Donald Miller's book which I think is called 'To own a dragon'
It's all about men, what it means to be a man, and growing up with the absence of a father

I grew up through my teenege years without my mother and it took me 20 years to realise what being a woman and a mother was about - only in the last couple of years did I really come to grips with the whole issue, after serious depression and other problems.

I hope you can help this lad. I think the church has a huge role to play in providing surrogates to those who grow up without parents, but also without grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles ..... the church is a family, and should provide these relationships where it possibly can.
