For me the best book I've read in 2006 was Miroslav Volf's Free of Charge. I liked it not just for the good theology but because in it you got to know something of who Volf is.
I've just got a copy of his new book, The End of Memory; Remembering Rightly in a Violent World. I've had a quick scan and it looks every bit as good as Free of Charge.
