(Note that my lack of TV aerial means I haven't actually seen the programmes in question.)

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time reading Dawkins. I was naive enough to think I could trounce his arguments soundly - I once looked for his email address, but never used it.

The problem is that he isn't really interested in arguing in an academic sense. Rather I've been struck by how when he is presented with someone who wants to reasonably and sensibly discuss the issues he sticks his fingers in his ears and sings softly to himself: "LA-LA-LA I'm not listening to the religious nut."

There are some scientists who are doing excellent work in and with the media to popularise their fields - but I wouldn't class him among them. I'm not in a position to criticize his science, but then his amazingly belligerent and aggressive approach doesn't really give anyone the chance to do so. Rather that same approach has cost him credibility among many I've spoken to who share his atheistic convictions.

I don't want to rant about the man and bad-mouth him, but he really doesn't seem interested in engaging with the realities of what he is arguing against, preferring to battle his own not-so-representative version.
